Invest4Nature’s NbS cases from the Tyrolean has joined our collection of our Living Labs implemented measures that are feature in the EU Mission Adaptation Stories.
These stories—“Promoting Protective Forests in Tyrol” and “Restoring Wild River Ecosystems in the Lech Valley”—highlight how local, nature-driven approaches are building climate resilience in alpine regions.
In Tyrol, forests are more than ecosystems—they are vital infrastructure. The region’s protective forests shield communities from avalanches, rockfalls, and landslides. Through careful forest management and restoration, local partners are enhancing these natural barriers, ensuring long-term safety and biodiversity. This work is a powerful example of how NbS can reduce disaster risk while preserving ecological integrity.
The Lech River restoration project focuses on rewilding one of the last near-natural alpine rivers in Europe. By reconnecting floodplains, removing barriers, and restoring natural flow dynamics, the initiative improves flood protection, boosts biodiversity, and supports sustainable tourism. It’s a model for how river ecosystems can be revitalized to serve both people and nature.
