Nature‑based solutions that restore biodiversity and enhance well‑being in European cities
European cities face growing challenges from climate change, biodiversity loss, water stress, and social inequality. This session explores innovative nature-based solutions that restore ecosystems while improving urban well-being. The showcased initiatives demonstrate how cities can integrate urban greening, biodiversity monitoring, aquatic habitat restoration, circular water systems, and wildfire resilience into everyday urban environments. They also highlight the importance of social inclusion and new economic mechanisms, such as biodiversity credit markets, to scale restoration efforts and create long-term value for communities and nature.
Together, the pitches present practical approaches – from mobile urban forests and community gardening programs to advanced biofiltration, biodiversity management tools, aquatic ecosystem technologies, and wildfire protection systems. The session illustrates how technology, nature restoration, and social innovation can work together to create healthier, more resilient, and more inclusive European cities.
